Comet is a male bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) that stranded on December 20, 2005. Originally found by Florida Fish and Wildlife , Gulf World staff began to lead the rescue efforts. Comet was young and beached alone on a sand bar at Deer Point Dam. During rehabilitation, he required 24 hour care, with feeds every 2 hours. Being rescued so close to Christmas, the name of one of Santa’s reindeer was perfect! Comet was deemed non-releasable due to his young age and lack of survival skills by National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA), and now calls Gulf World Marine Park his permanent home. Comet thrives in the bottlenose dolphin population that includes other stranded animals. Cajun is another male that originally stranded in Louisiana; Comet and Cajun are close friends!
